How Digital Twins Became Digital Angels

By Carl Ford
February 27, 2025

Can we stop calling the additional data a Digital Twin and recognize the Digital Angel?

What I mean is that, while a twin has a mind of its own, the reality is that, when the term started, people were getting the information into the cloud replicating what was in the factory floor.

The concept of a “Digital Twin” has significantly evolved since its inception. Initially, it referred to the replication of physical assets or processes into digital form, primarily for monitoring and analysis. With advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics, these digital counterparts have transformed from passive replicas into proactive advisors, offering predictive insights and prescriptive guidance. This evolution suggests a role more akin to a “Digital Angel,” providing oversight and counsel beyond mere duplication.

In the early stages, digital twins served as virtual models of physical entities, enabling real-time monitoring and optimization. They facilitated improved decision-making by mirroring the state and behavior of their physical counterparts. However, as AI technologies have advanced, these digital representations have gained the capability to analyze vast datasets, identify patterns, and predict future outcomes. This progression has enhanced their role from simple mirroring to offering strategic advice, much like a guardian angel provides guidance.

Like a guardian angel, the data compilation goes beyond the replication of the original data and makes for sound advice and something close to a conscience. And like guardian angels, it will be up to the company how the machines accept or ignore the guidance that is provided.

So, yes, I think that the Digital Twin has evolved with AI to be a Digital Angel.

Today, Digital Twins leverage AI and analytics to provide predictive and prescriptive insights, far exceeding mere mirroring. Therefore “Digital Angel” better captures this proactive, advisory role, emphasizing guidance and oversight.

Digital Angel also evokes a sense of ethical guidance and a “conscience,” which aligns with the potential for AI-driven systems to provide informed and responsible recommendations. This resonates with the growing importance of ethical considerations in AI and data-driven decision-making.

“Digital Angel” suggests a more human-centered approach, where technology serves as a supportive and guiding force, rather than a mere replica. The concept of an angel is inherently positive and helpful.

While it would be nice to say “always let your conscience be your guide,” sometimes the lessons are only learned after the incident. This is a very important point, and it reflects the reality of how these systems are used.
